Well, had another excellent evening out at KB Ranch this past Tuesday for my third or fourth birthday celebration — can't quite remember. I lost track. If you haven't made it out yet, don't worry, we just dropped a new date, so grab your tickets here for Friday, August 21. Another one of my "birthday celebrations" is what I'll be covering today. I'm pretty sure at one point family members just started to pile on what they wanted to do and/or eat and used my birthday as an excuse…lucky for them, I don't mind being used in that manner in the slightest.

I finally made it out to Boondocks in Parker on Sunday, and I'm not exaggerating when I tell you it might be heaven on earth. It's technically a place built for kids, but I'm fairly certain it was actually built for me.

The tell was in the arcade. They had the Fast and the Furious racing game sitting back to back with the Halo game, which felt less like a coincidence and more like someone read my diary. It has a decent-sized arcade with games for every age, bag toss, skee ball, basketball, racing, all of it, and I'd bet money they have more claw machines per square foot than anywhere else I've set foot. You cash your tickets in for prizes, stuffed animals and the like, and there's a bar, full bowling alley, and a private event area for whatever else your heart might desire.

Then there's the outdoor stuff, which is the real reason to go before summer slips away. I for some reason volunteered for the bumper boats instead of the go-karts and got absolutely soaked, which made some kids very happy (some of whom I didn't even know), but I guess that's the point of it. The go-karts are split across two tracks. The main road track is for the adults and older kids, and the little ones can ride along as passengers so you can show them the ropes. Then there's the rookie track so the younger crew can drive their own. Fair warning, in any given heat there's always one kart that is mysteriously slower than the rest, and getting stuck in it is never, ever fun. Neither is dealing with the aftermath…

And that's barely scratching it. There are two 18-hole mini-golf courses, one done up like a skull island, the other a pirate setup. There's a 38-foot ropes course, a two-story laser tag arena, dark-mode bowling, and an XD dark ride if you want to sit down and still have your senses assaulted.

Here's how it works. A 4-hour pass to all the attractions runs $40 a person, or $25 if you go on a Tuesday, and there's a $50 Ultimate pass that throws in arcade credit. If the weather turns, you can grab an indoor-only pass for $30, or just pay as you go at around $10 per attraction. A lot of the good stuff is outdoor and weather permitting, which brings me to my actual point.

Summer is basically gone. The kids are about to be back in classrooms, if they aren't already. If you've got a free day or two left, or are just preparing for AI to take over all labor and don't mind your kids missing school, this is how you send the season off with a bang. Broadway in the Park: A Free Family Festival

Free family festival! The Performing Arts Academy brings Broadway in the Park to Highland Heritage Regional Park in Highlands Ranch. In the spirit of NYC's Broadway in Bryant Park, PAA students perform popular musical theatre songs and dances. The evening includes family activities, such as face painting and sing-alongs, plus a Kona Ice truck on site (available for purchase). The first 100 families get a special giveaway. Bring a picnic.

G-Que BBQ breaks ground on a Parker location near Parker Road and E-470
TLDR: Colorado's homegrown championship barbecue brand G-Que BBQ broke ground Aug. 3 on a new restaurant near South Parker Road and E-470, its 11th location statewide, with an opening planned for late 2026. Founded in 2015 by pitmaster Jason Ganahl, the Parker spot will feature a full bar, rotating weekly specials, grab-and-go Ice Cream Farm treats, G-Que's $1 Happy Hour Beer, and a drive-up "Que-Thru" for order-ahead pickup.

Douglas County approves a 35-year, $19M tax break for a Parker data center
TLDR: Douglas County commissioners unanimously approved a 35-year agreement Tuesday giving Flexential a 100% rebate of the county's share of business personal property taxes on its new Parker data center, worth about $19.3 million over the life of the deal (the Town of Parker and Douglas County Schools still collect their shares). The Colorado-based company is investing roughly $205 million in the 249,000-square-foot facility going up on Compark Boulevard near South Chambers Road, which will run on a closed-loop, near-zero-water cooling system with power from CORE Electric. County documents estimate the site will bring about 16 permanent jobs. The approval runs counter to a broader Front Range trend, as Denver, Jefferson, Boulder and Broomfield have all recently paused or restricted new data centers.

Castle Pines Council postpones its annexation-policy vote to Aug. 25 and sets an Aug. 19 listening session
TLDR: At its Aug. 11 meeting, the Castle Pines City Council postponed a resolution to adopt a draft Annexation Policy until the Aug. 25 Council meeting. Ahead of that vote, the city will hold a public listening session on Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Castle Pines Community Center (7404 Yorkshire Drive) to hear residents' feedback on the draft policy. At the same meeting, Council also approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Douglas County Clerk and Recorder for a coordinated election on Nov. 3, 2026.

Three Highlands Ranch elementary schools consolidate into new schools this fall
TLDR: Starting with the 2026-27 school year, the Douglas County School District is consolidating six Highlands Ranch elementary schools into three, a plan the Board of Education approved unanimously on April 22, 2025. Acres Green Elementary consolidates into Fox Creek to become Silver Spruce Elementary; Heritage Elementary consolidates into Summit View to become Mountain Peak Elementary; and Saddle Ranch Elementary consolidates into Eldorado to become Golden Ridge Elementary. The Acres Green, Heritage, and Saddle Ranch buildings close as neighborhood elementary schools, with the district repurposing Heritage for its Cloverleaf Enrichment School and Saddle Ranch for its Child Find and Bridge programs.

BAM Broadband plans a new fiber network for Castle Pines, Castle Rock, the Pinery and Parker's Cottonwood area
TLDR: Colorado-based BAM Broadband announced on Aug. 11 that it will build a new fiber internet network reaching the City of Castle Pines, the Town of Castle Rock, The Pinery and the Cottonwood area that straddles Parker and unincorporated Douglas County, pitching it as a high-speed alternative to existing providers with symmetrical plans from 1 Gbps up to 8 Gbps. Engineering, permitting and construction are already underway, and the company expects the first homes to be ready for installation in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Castle Pines Parkway reopens its rebuilt westbound stretch past Timber Trail Elementary
TLDR: The newly reconstructed westbound section of Castle Pines Parkway between Monarch Boulevard and Deer Clover Drive, including the stretch in front of Timber Trail Elementary, reopened to traffic on Aug. 11, timed to ease back-to-school traffic. Crews have installed more than 2,800 feet of new waterline west of Monarch and finished paving and striping on this segment; work continues on the remaining portion west of Deer Clover Drive, with the full reconstruction on track to wrap by early fall.

Douglas County opens applications for its first-ever Citizen Academy
TLDR: Douglas County is taking applications for its inaugural Citizen Academy, a new program that gives residents an inside look at how county government works through direct access to elected officials, county staff and subject-matter experts. The cohort meets one evening a month over eight to 10 months at county facilities around the county, with facility tours, hands-on demonstrations and small-group talks with county leadership, and it is open to anyone wanting to get more informed and involved, new arrivals and longtime residents alike. Applications are open through Aug. 26.

Douglas County schools foundation hands out about 1,500 backpacks for back-to-school
TLDR: The Foundation for Douglas County Schools is set to provide roughly 1,500 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students this year through its Lend A Hand School Supply Drive, a program it has run since 1991 that has grown from a few hundred students to more than 1,600 backpacks requested last year (about $102,400 in donated items). Volunteers and partners, including the Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch, spend the summer collecting and packing supplies so kids can walk into class with everything they need.

County assessor warns older homeowners about a fake AI property-tax video
TLDR: The Douglas County Assessor's Office is warning older homeowners about a viral, AI-generated video falsely claiming Congress passed a law creating a "Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request" form that unlocks big property tax savings. Assessor Toby Damisch says there is no such federal form, law or program, and the office has fielded calls and emails from residents asking for it. Colorado does have legitimate senior property tax relief programs, each with its own eligibility rules and official application, and residents with questions can contact the Assessor's Office directly at 303-660-7450 rather than trusting an online video.
